Sharlene Hooper
Some singers deserve the term "natural-born singer", and
this is especially true in the case of Country and Western singer Sharlene
Hooper. In fact, it is literally true.
Sharlene not only is the daughter of Country and Western
singers Gene and Flo Hooper, but she was born on the road in Lewiston, Maine
between a family singing engagement in Moncton, New Brunswick, and one in
Wheeling, West Virginia. What's more, Sharlene's crib on the balance of the
tour was her father's guitar case, for which her mother made a special
mattress. With such a beginning, there was just no way that Sharlene could
have avoided becoming another singing Hooper.
Sharlene's first professional singing appearance was
made when she was nine years old, oddly enough in Lewiston, Maine; the town in
which she was born. This debut was made with Country and Western's great,
Hank Snow. Occasional professional appearances continued for about a year,
when Gene and Flo Hooper decided that their daughter's education should come
first, and Sharlene "retired" from show business at the age of ten to attend
school in Machias, Maine, where she continues to make her home today.
Sharlene's achievements in the Country and Western music
field have been many. In 1979 she was nominated for Songwriter of the year
for Maine. In 1980 she was nominated for Female Performer and Songwriter of
the year for Maine and won Songwriter of the year for Maine that same day. In
1982 she was declared winner of the Maine finals of the Wrangler Jeans Country
Star search contest when she sang the song, "Not Tonight, I've Got A
Heartache", written by Lanny Lambert of New York. She was recognized for this
event by members of the Senate and House of Representatives of the State of
Maine and received a Certificate of Recognition. She then went to Nashville,
Tennessee where she recorded her songs with Roundabout records in Nashville.
She was then invited to sing on the Grand Ole Opry and the Roy Acuff Theater
in Nashville. In 1986 she was nominated by the Maine Country Music
Association for Female Vocalist and the rest is history.
Sharlene is an outstanding Country and Western
performer. Her natural ability at song writing has produced songs such as
"Get Up and Go," "I'd Rather Be Blue," and "Fool Around".
A natural-born singer, composer, bass guitarist and
beautiful inside and out. That's Sharlene Hooper.
